The Role of Periosteum in Fracture Healing

Abstract
Variables that influence fracture healing include the following : biological and biochemical factors, severe soft tissue damage. Associated with open and comminuted fractures, internal splint that contributes to immobilization of the fragments,
and
so
on. Generally, Fracture healing is influenced by cortex, periosteum, endosteum, and bone marrow in rigid stabilization of a fracture. There has been a long-standing debate as to the role of periosteum and endosteum.
The present study was undertaken to compare the effect of periosteum and endostum in facture healing of growing rabbits, weigh about 2.0kg Transverse osteotomywas performed in the tibia diaphysis between second and third pin, using a Gigli saw
and
held
in a neutral position with pin and resin external fixation. A number of animal were then allocated to each of the three experimental groups . A number of animal were then allocated to each of the three experimental groups : Group I-The
periosteum
and
endosteum were not removed, Group II- The peristeum was removed, Group III-The perostum and endosteum were removed.
Following operation, X-rays were taken weekly for postoperative 8 weeks. The results were obtained as follows:
1. In Group I. Fracture healing obtained, postoperative 3.3 weeks.
2. Fracture healing obtained postoperative 5.4 weeks in group II, periosteum removed.
3. Fracture healing obtained postoperative 6 weeks in group III, periosteum and endosteum removed.
This results suggest that preservation of periosteum is more important than that of endosteum.
